Alavés 2 Huesca 1 - La Liga Week 12 (11th November 2018)

Huesca are without a win in 11 matches after losing 2-1 at Alaves, who - with 23 points from 12 games - have now made their best ever start to a La Liga season.

This was coach Francisco's fourth game in charge of Huesca. He stuck with a 4-5-1 formation, making just one change to the team that almost beat Getafe last week: Pablo Insua came into defence for Etxeita who was injured.

The visitors began reasonably well, and had most of the possession during the opening 20 minutes. Right wing back Jorge Miramon got forward and combined well with the likes of Serdar Gurler, Moi Gomez and David Ferreiro who were all playing in midfield with an attacking mindset.

Damian Musto played as a defensive midfielder and Cucho Hernandez was up front alone. As the game progressed Hernandez became more and more isolated and Alaves became more and more comfortable.

The home team, playing 4-4-2, were always dangerous on counter attacks and tried to attack with pace, and plenty of crosses. Borja Baston had gone close to breaking the deadlock, and the home team were in the ascendancy when out of the blue, in the 35th minute, Huesca took the lead.

Moi Gomez skipped beyond a half-hearted tackle form Manu Garcia and shot from distance. It was a tame effort and Antonio Sivera should have kept it out, but he didn't. This was a big slice of luck - just the sort that a team at the bottom need.

Huesca's objective should have been to reach half time 1-0 up, however they conceded within six minutes, and are without a clean sheet all season.

Ibai Gomez crossed from the right for Jony, who had got beyond Miramon and headed home from close range. This was a simple goal and a typical one from Abelardo's Alaves - If Huesca are to survive they have to defend better.

After half time Alaves grew and grew further into the game - controlling possession and restricting Huesca to very little.

The next goal arrived in the 68th minute after calamitous defending from Ruben Semedo who gifted possession to Ruben Sobrino. The former Real Madrid and Manchester City player fired in his third goal of the season, with the help of a small ricochet of Jorge Pulido. This was a truly disastrous goal to concede.

Huesca's attempts at finding an equaliser were, overall, very tame. They lack creativity in the midfield and Cucho Hernandez didn't threaten to score all afternoon. In the 84th minute substitute Samuele Longo did have a good chance from close range, but Sivera atoned for his earlier mistake with a vital save.

Alaves are strong on the counter attack and have now scored eight headed goals this season. Today they also controlled large spells of possession and showed themselves to be a far superior team to Huesca, who are bottom of the table with six points from 12 games, and the worst defensive record in the division.
