Alcorcon 0-2 RCD Mallorca - La Liga Smartbank Week 8 (26th October 2020)

RCD Mallorca were comfortable winners at the Estadio Santo Domingo in the final fixture of Week 8 in La Liga Smartbank, defeating Alcorcon 2-0 with first half goals from Antonio Sanchez and Marc Cardona.

Mallorca kept a seventh consecutive clean sheet and have now gone 670 minutes without conceding, surpassing a club record set in the Third Division in the 1958-59 season.

Alcorcon, returning to action after two suspended fixtures due to Covid-19 cases within the squad, fell to a fourth consecutive defeat and remain 21st in the table. They've now failed to score in four straight games.

Jose Leon made his debut in the Alcorcon defence and in attack Alex Llamas was given his first start of the season.

Luis Garcia Plaza made six changes to the Mallorca team that drew against Albacete, resting Dani Rodriguez and Salva Sevilla. Antonio Sanchez, a Youth Academy graduate from Palma de Mallorca, was given his first start for the club and opened the scoring on 19 minutes with an emphatic finish after Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta's through ball.

Unmarked, Marc Cardona doubled the advantage three minutes later, steering Joan Sastre's cut back into the bottom corner to put the visitors in complete control.

Alcorcon had begun the game brightly, hitting the post through Hugo Fraile on three minutes, but once they fell behind they never looked like fighting back. On the cusp of half-time Mallorca almost scored a third when Antonio Raillo headed against the cross bar and Martin Valjent spurned the rebound.

Mallorca's midfielders (Aleix Febas, Sanchez and Ruiz de la Galarreta) were dictating play and in central defence the combination of Raillo and Valjent looked imperious against Alcorcon's young strike force of Llamas and Oscar Arribas.

One of the few bright notes for Alcorcon was the performance of 20 year old Venezuelan winger Samuel Sosa who created problems for Sastre and then Fran Gamez at right back. Late on Mere Hermoso sent on 21 year old Alvaro Juan de la Torre for his debut.

Luis Garcia Plaza brought on 15 year old Argentine sensation Luka Romero for the closing stages as Mallorca comfortably saw out the win, with substitute Abdon Prats firing wide late on.

After four straight defeats Mere's team face Sporting Gijon, who are second in the table, next; whilst third place Mallorca will host fifth place Malaga.
